A one way ticket to Vietnam

In just 35 days, I will be getting on an Emirates one way flight to Vietnam. Leading up to this decision has been a bit of a whirlwind. I’ve known since I came back from Sri Lanka at the end of 2018 that I wouldn’t stay long in the UK. I spent 3 months in Sri Lanka as a mental health volunteer with SLV Global. Those 3 months changed my life in ways I can’t even begin to describe.

My first day in Sri Lanka 🇱🇰

An email came in from TEFL about different jobs teaching English as a foreign language. The position in Vietnam caught my eye because it’s an internship and as it’s my first full time teaching position, I think I will appreciate the extra support. So on 9th January I’ll be flying to Vietnam to teach English for 5 months. I have a flight to Bangkok booked for 5th June, but other than that I have no real plans.

I taught some English to various ages and abilities while I was volunteering in Sri Lanka and was surprised by how rewarding I found it. Now I’ve finished my 120 hour TEFL course, it’s a bit daunting that in less than 2 months I’ll be an actual teacher.

Moving to a country I’ve never been to, to start a job I’ve never done before gives me the kind of buzz that you can only get making big choices and big changes in your life; I thrive on this feeling. People keep telling me I’m brave, but I don’t feel brave. If anything I feel excited.

The one thing I hear when I tell people I’m going on this adventure is that they wish they had travelled more. I hear so many excuses from people when it comes to travel. But trust me, there is nothing more liberating than taking the plunge and getting it booked; whether that’s volunteering, paid work or backpacking.

I’m sure there will be some challenges on this journey, and I hope you’ll join me in facing them head on.
